Tooth Sensitivity After Filling
Patients are often surprised to learn that they require a tooth filling. Fillings are commonly used in the treatment of a cavity or to restore a tooth with significant decay. A filling can also be used to repair a broken tooth. Cavities are incredibly common and impact patients of all ages. An estimated half of the population has at least one cavity. Good oral hygiene is critical in maintaining good oral health and in the prevention of cavities.
Tooth Filling
In most cases, a filling takes about an hour. The procedure often takes longer for younger patients. The dental team will work diligently to ensure patients remain calm throughout the procedure. This may include playing music, movies, or even using sedation if needed. The procedure to place a filling is summarized below:
- X-rays are obtained to identify the location and amount of decay
- Discuss procedure expectations with the patient
- A localized anesthetic is used to numb the treatment area
- A drill removes decay present on the tooth
- Filling is placed
In most cases, a filling is completed in a single appointment. If a patient has multiple cavities in numerous areas of their mouth, the team may schedule additional appointments. Dental professionals will avoid numbing the entire mouth at once.
Post-Procedure Sensitivity
It will take some time for the local anesthetic to wear off. It can take one to three hours for the medicine to wear off and for feeling to return. In order to avoid chewing on gums, patients should avoid chewing until the numbness goes away. It can also be helpful to use a straw when drinking.
Minor pain and sensitivity are normal after a filling. Swelling or sensitivity that occurs should resolve itself within a few days or less. If the pain and swelling are persistent or do not improve within two days, patients should follow up with the office. This could indicate an infection or issue.
Recovery
The patient will be provided with aftercare instructions to follow. Abiding by these instructions helps minimize sensitivity and discomfort.
- Focus on consuming mild and soft foods for 24-48 hours after the procedure
- Do not chew on the side of the mouth where the affected tooth is located
- Sucking can increase sensitivity, and the use of straws should be avoided once feeling returns to the mouth
- Cold compresses can be used to help with swelling
- An over-the-counter pain medication can help keep patients comfortable
- Avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours after the filling

After a filling, it continues to be imperative for patients to practice good oral hygiene with twice-daily brushing and daily flossing. Regular visits to the dentist are also important for the early detection and treatment of any issues.
