Dental Implant vs Dental Bridge

Even though there are many health benefits of the dental implants chapel hill nc versus a dental bridge, after an oral examination and a consultation, the implant may not be for everyone. Let’s take step back, look at the reasons behind either, the costs for each solution and the benefits of each solution.

Why must I get either an Implant or a Bridge

It is unhealthy to leave a gap in your teeth. If you either had an extraction due to the declining health of the tooth or you lost it due to an accident, the remaining gap in your teeth should be filled in a timely fashion. If left unattended the neighboring teeth will shift into that gap affecting your bite pattern and your speech. We haven’t even addressed your smile and how the gap affects it. In fact, it has been proven that your smile has a direct impact on both your self-esteem and your self-confidence so one might say it is invaluable.

The Physical Difference between a bridge and an implant

To fill that gap for centuries the option has been a dental bridge. Even though there are several variations the concept is simple. A bridge has two sides that hold a structure to span the gap. You have two neighboring teeth, called abutment teeth, that support a suspended artificial tooth between them. The implant is more complex. A titanium post is surgically inserted into your jawbone. After several months, the post will fuse to the jawbone acting as an artificial root. A metal extension is put on the post called an abutment and then a fabricated porcelain or ceramic crown is affixed to the abutment.

The Pros and Cons of Each Approach

The dental implant is a more expensive procedure. If the cost is not an objection this is a more favorable route to take. The post makes the artificial tooth much stronger than the bridge. Since there is no hardware involved it is the most natural look cosmetically. Sometimes if your jaw is not strong enough to take the post a bone graft may be introduced. Or, it may not be an option and the bridge is your solution. It is much easier to normally brush and floss around the implant versus the bridge since the bridge is basically one appliance spanning three teeth. What happens often is a bridge is put in first then an implant can follow sometime later. This method addresses that gap prior to the financial commitment.

Proper Oral Hygiene

The health industry suggests strongly that you schedule a dental evaluation twice a year to maintain the health of your natural teeth. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day combats plaque buildup that has enamel destroying acids. With either solution if properly cared for you can see 10 to 25 years of longevity. Of course, with either artificial method, biting and chewing on items like ice cubes or pens will not be advisable. Start with a conversation with your dentist to address the best option for you and the health of your teeth, your gums and your smile.
